The Protect our Future Project aim at intervention in the community to achieve peace through the training of youths who are students. This training takes place through the peace camp and peace club.
The peace club provides opportunity for students to learn the skills of living together and for mediation. The students trained are expected to be peer mediators to their fellow students.
There are twenty peace clubs at the moment which are supported by CHDST by training and visitation during their meetings. We intend to continue the practise. It is our considered opinion to strengthen the peace club, there is need for more training and to encourage the clubs to begin the next phase of turning the schools into democratic institutions. The focus of turning the schools into democratic institutes means that the club will be in the vanguard in campaigning that class leaders and school functionaries should be elected instead of appointed. In the first phase, the emphasis was on training and formation of peace clubs. In this next phase the emphasis is on implementation of the training learnt. In this regards, we expect the students to start the process of being peer mediators and champions of schools been democratic institutions. This aspect is very important in protecting our future. It is envisaged that students should be able to hold their leaders accountable for their actions. This process will have impact in the wider society.
The annual peace camp meetings provides an opportunity for members of the peace camp to share ideas, network among themselves and plan joint projects.
The teachers already trained are animators of the peace clubs and the Network of Peace & Civic Education Teachers are providing support to the teachers.
