INTERNATIONAL YOUTH / STUDENT LEADERSHIP AND PEACE CAMP IN THE NIGER DELTA (Port Harcourt, Nigeria). Application booklet 9th-18th August, 2008
PEACE CAMP The peace camp is to provide an atmosphere of friendship and interaction in which peace education and conflict resolution is taught. The session will consider the four values of education: learn to know, learn to do, learn to be and learn to live peacefully. The participatory approach is used and teachers who are already trained will assist in the training of the students in the summer camp. The training will involve a lot of interactive activities, workshops and role-play.
The Exchange will be based on 6 sections:
- Political development in Nigeria, Nationalism and National Values
- Rights and obligations of the citizens
- Culture of peace, conflict prevention, transformation and management
- Election conducting and monitoring
- Peace building and peace education.
- Development of strategies for a Campaign for protect our future.
Participants: The participants will be Youths / Students from the ages of 15 to 25. We are extending invitations to participants from outside Nigeria to come and interact with Nigerian Students and Youths. This is an opportunity for participants to appreciate the reality of people living in different parts of the world. There will be two separate camps running concurrently. The Youth camp will be different from the students’ camps. However, there will be joint activities between the two groups. Selection Criteria: The selection criteria will be based on proved leadership quality, which will be attested by recommendation letter from either a community leader or head teacher in school. Each participant will be required to write an essay of 500words on their vision for peace in their community. Training methodology: The Trainings will be organized to encourage team building, personal sharing and transformation. Participants will be encouraged to share their knowledge and experiences with others. Participatory approaches are essential for the development of skills, qualities and competencies that aim at affecting behavioural changes. These will lead and encourage Creative thinking, decision-making, problem solving, reasoning and learning skills. Resource persons will be invited to moderate and facilitate the process. They will be requested to submit a synthesis of the main ideas developed. This will form the basis for further training. The Features of The Methodology Include: - Places the students / youths in the large dimension of events defining the world as actors not spectators from the local to global dimension.
- This method fights against fatalistic concepts that ordinary people have no power by widening their horizon and giving them the tool of analysis.
- It provides the space to recognize the contradiction between views from their own experience and views based on dominant culture.
Features Of Training Include: - The training will take the form of lectures, workshops, interactive sessions to build up friendship and solidarity, and visits to democratic institutions.
- Enlightenment and awareness programmes.
- Visits to the grassroots institutions.
- A commitment to share knowledge and experience with others.
- Participatory approaches will also be used.
Expected Outcome: The graduates of this programme, haven imbibed the tenets of democracy, will act as models for their fellow students and this will have a multiplier effect. The graduate of this programme having imbibed the culture of peace will translate this to their lives, their community and the society, thereby building a just and peaceful society. The formation of peace clubs in schools will assist in the students been peer mediators to themselves. The students trained will form a network of “peace clubs” in the various schools to continue to share ideas and to involve more students in the training. The essays by the participants will be published as a collection of youth thoughts on the vision for peace in communities.
